I respect someone who can play everything like I do more than any youtube guitar virtuoso who can't keep a beat or lay down the bass for sure. Yeah, the old track bouncing trick. My buddy had a cheap vestax without bouncing with only two pannable tracks and we got around that by mixing down to stereo cassette and popping that in to the track recorder.

The slow speed and bouncing mixed with my insistence of only doing one take on the fly with songs we only heard once while trading tracks created some pretty sloppy and crappy sounding stuff but it's real and raw and has it's own appeal that way I think.

Shit I didn't even tune up sometimes, just plugged in and hit record for some stuff. I regret not taking the time on some of the early stuff to make it better but we thought we would be in a real studio to record the stuff one day and it was just a scratch pad for ideas. I can't hold a flame to my old guitar player, check these out when you get a chance, he was a monster.

I used to practice the bass a lot more and had a bit more acrobatic ability back then but he just shredded that fretboard and even his mispicks and slips sound like they belonged there, weird.

That reminds me I need to do some meth and practice guitar for 6 hours.

The "pannable 2-track" method sounds like what I was doing before I had the 4-track. Record a track. Feed it into the left channel of a stereo tape recorder while playing along through the right channel. Plug THAT result into the left channel, and add another track on the right. Repeat until fluctuating tape speeds put you in an entirely new key, etc. I have as many of those "2-track demos" (as I call em) as I do 4-track demos, but due to the same sort off "I'll fix it when I'm at AIR studios" attitude you spoke of, they are TOO lo-fi/sloppy/out of tune to ever reach the light of day. Some of them were re-done as 4-tracks, and those will get here eventually...
